Our Analysis and Test Results
These binoculars provide exceptional quality and performance that is only attainable by spending thousands. We think these are worth every penny, but only if it is within your budget.
Performance Comparison
Clarity
Our first test metric measured the clarity of each model in tests viewing various signs and birds of different shapes and sizes. Given its obvious importance, this metric comprises 35% of each model's overall score.
The Zeiss Victory SF 10x42 proved to be one of the most impressive models we tested. It offers the observer an incredible level of clarity and very distinct sharpness. The slightest color fringing only occurs at the outermost part of what's visible and mostly near the sides. But, the blurriness is also ever so slight compared to nearly every other model.
Overall, the clarity of the Zeiss is really remarkable and only attainable with the most premium models of binoculars on the market today. This model is the difference between looking at a bird through a lens and feeling like it is perched right in front of you.
Brightness
In our comprehensive brightness assessment, we gauged visibility in different brightness levels and measured exit pupil size to fully understand and rate each model's light transmission capabilities. The Zeiss Victory SF 10x42 followed up its great performance in our clarity test by doing very well in the brightness tests.
Firstly, with our observation of brightness, we experienced a near-perfect and color-accurate viewing experience, only noticing subtle differences in the darkness of shadows compared to what would otherwise be seen with the naked eye. Our second test, using tools to measure light transmission, validated what we were seeing with our own eyes and measured 1112 Lux. An exit pupil size of 4.2 mm is neither big nor small but effectively allows the Zeiss Victory SF 10x42 to transmit an impressive amount of observable and measurable light.
Comfort
In our comfort tests and evaluations, we didn't find the Victory SF to be any more or less comfortable than many premium models on the market today.
We weighed the Zeiss Victory SF 10x42 to be 28.2 ounces, which is about average for most full-sized models, and found it to be perfectly balanced. This model was especially ergonomic to use, and the eyecups had a nice feel to them. When it comes down to gripping and handling, the Victory is an ergonomic and easy-to-grip binocular that rests well in hand for long periods of use due in large part to well-balanced weight.
The included neck strap, albeit a bit scratchy, will also keep you from dropping them should you ever lose your grip. Overall we found this to be a fairly comfortable model to use.
Field of View
Our field of view test metric has been enhanced to incorporate a more realistic and practical scenario involving the observation of vertical boards on a vertical board fence at a fixed distance.
During our field testing, we distinctly identified 54 vertical fence boards using the Zeiss Victory SF 10x42, which was about average for this group at the time of testing. That said, other premium models managed to view 60 or more fence boards.
This average performance from this otherwise quite remarkable model is one of the very few places where the Zeiss has room for improvement. However, we think that this model's field of view is more than sufficient enough for birding.
Ease of Adjustment
When it came down to our fifth test metric, ease of adjustment, the Zeiss Victory SF 10x42 demonstrated it was about as good as it gets and received very few criticisms from our test team.
Focusing, as well as locking the diopter on the Zeiss Victory SF, is easy, clean, and smooth. It's about as crisp to operate as one could ever want. When it came to eye relief, the manufacturer specified 18 mm. We measured 19 mm in our testing. The eyepiece adjustment lacks clear and tactile engagements, so instead of stopping at clear fixed intervals, it rolls through loosely defined positions.
Close Focus Range
Our last test measured close-range focus and the Zeiss Victory SF 10x42 proved to be exceptional. This model is able to focus as little as 4.5 feet from an object, as was measured in our close-focus testing. That's a little bit better than the manufacturers claimed 4.9 feet.
If you can afford the Zeiss Victory SF 10x42, then they are an obvious choice for taking to a butterfly house, aviary, botanical garden, or zoo. With these, you are sure to have the most immersive experiences possible while observing and identifying butterflies, birds, plants, and insects.
Should You Buy the Zeiss Victory SF 10x42?
The Zeiss Victory SF 10x42 offers one of the most crystal clear and bright viewing experiences, with the kind of clarity and brightness that can only be seen by the most premium models on the market. We enjoyed testing the Zeiss Victory SF 10x42 and think it is one of the best premium options to consider. It is in the multi-thousand-dollar price range, which is probably unattainable or not practical for many. Still, if you are able to spend the money, you won't regret buying these binos that are likely to become a family heirloom and, with proper care, will be used for generations.
What Other Binoculars Should You Consider?
If you are looking at the Zeiss Victory SF 10x42, then you may already be considering a model of binoculars in the multi-thousand-dollar price range, and you need to look no further for the best performance that money can buy. On the other hand, if your budget is in the sub-thousand-dollar price range, then you'll be pleased with the Vortex Viper HD 8x42. It offers a performance that approaches that of the Zeis Victory and is only a minor step back in a couple of areas. If you experienced sticker shock while looking at either model and require a more affordable pair of binos, then you'll need to consider the Vortex Diamondback HD 8x42. These walk a fine line between performance and price without significant compromises. While they are not on the level of the most premium models, you'll still be able to enjoy all sorts of viewing experiences without buyer's remorse.
