Our Verdict

If you have plenty of storage space and love a soft, squishy bed, the HomeMate CertiPUR-US offers dreamy comfort at a fantastic price. Earning our Best Buy award for its outstanding value, this mattress ditches the valves and air pumps in favor of plush, straightforward memory foam. While it is incredibly bulky and takes up as much space as a massive duffel bag when rolled up, it is completely fuss-free. It rolls out in seconds, won't ever pop or leak in the middle of the night, and provides a cozy surface that feels like a real bed rather than a pool floaty. For just $90, it is an unbeatable choice for budget-conscious car and truck campers with cargo room to spare.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Our Experience

We spent weeks sleeping on the HomeMate CertiPUR-US in tents, in the backs of trucks, and on our living room floors to see how it stacked up against the competition.

When it comes to comfort, this pad relies entirely on three inches of memory foam rather than a combination of foam and air. This means it is incredibly plush. However, unlike an air mattress, you cannot precisely adjust the firmness—you get what you get. If you like a firm sleeping surface or frequently camp on uneven ground, this might not be the best fit. But if you prefer a soft bed, it is an absolute delight. The outer material is exceptionally cozy, avoiding the plastic, sticky feel of many traditional camping pads.

In terms of ease of use, it is hard to beat. You do not have to worry about inflating it or patching a leak. You simply unroll it and go to sleep. Packing it away is just as fast, though rolling it up takes a little bit of wrestling.

Our main sticking point with this mattress is its packed size and versatility. Measuring 30 by 17 inches when rolled and weighing 9 pounds, it takes up a massive amount of room. You need a large trunk or an empty truck bed to transport it easily. Finally, it lacks an official insulation rating (R-value). Based on our testing, we estimate its R-value is in the 1-3 range. It kept us perfectly comfortable on nights in the 40s and 50s, but we would not recommend taking it out in freezing winter weather.

We absolutely love how easy this pad makes setting up camp. Rolling into a campsite late at night and simply tossing this mattress into the back of a truck or tent takes all the headache out of bedtime. We also appreciate the cozy, fabric-like cover. It feels much more like a real bedroom mattress than a piece of camping gear. Since you can unzip the cover and throw it in the wash, keeping it fresh after a dusty trip is simple.

The price is another massive highlight. At $90, it is a fraction of the cost of higher-end pads. Our team also liked that the included stuff sack is oversized. In fact, there is enough room in the bag to stash a normal pillow and a compressible down sleeping bag right alongside the mattress. One tester noted, “Despite access to much fancier pads, I usually reach for this one because it is so quick and easy to roll out and I love the squishy memory foam. I also have a ton of room in my truck bed. If I were more space-constrained, this pad takes up too much room.”

Dislikes

The sheer bulk of the HomeMate CertiPUR-US is its biggest drawback. If you have a smaller car, packing this pad alongside your cooler, tent, and luggage is going to be a tight squeeze.

This pad does not collapse small. In fact, it's the largest sleeping pad we've ever seen that includes double pads! In addition, this is the least durable cover we've seen on a pad.   Credit: Chris McNamara

We were also quite disappointed with the included stuff sack. While we loved its roomy size, the quality is very poor. During our testing, the straps quickly broke and the seams started to come apart. While this isn't a dealbreaker given the mattress's low price, it is definitely a bummer. Lastly, the soft cover we love so much has a bad habit of attracting leaves, pine needles, and campground debris.

Should You Buy the HomeMate CertiPUR-US?

Yes, if you are outfitting a van or truck bed, have plenty of storage space at home, and want maximum squishy comfort on a tight budget. It is an excellent buy for casual campers heading out in mild weather who do not want to bother with pumps and valves. However, if you have a compact car, prefer a firm and adjustable mattress, or plan to camp in freezing temperatures, we highly recommend passing on this model and looking for an insulated inflatable option instead.

What Other Camping Mattresses Should You Consider?

  • REI Co-op Camp Dreamer XL - If you want similar plush comfort but need something that packs down significantly smaller, the Camp Dreamer XL is a fantastic alternative. It uses a mix of air and foam, allowing you to adjust the firmness, and offers plenty of warmth. It costs about $100 more, but the space savings and adjustability are well worth it.

  • HEST Foamy Sleeping Pad - If you love the idea of a roll-out memory foam pad but want premium durability and all-season warmth, the HEST Foamy is top-tier. It boasts a much higher insulation rating (8.8 R-value) and better materials, though it comes with a steep $379 price tag and is still very bulky.
Therm-a-Rest MondoKing 3D: If you are willing to invest in the absolute best overall sleep experience, this is our favorite mattress. It features an ultra-comfortable 4.3-inch thickness, an easy-to-use dual-valve inflation system, and a warm 7.0 R-value that will keep you cozy in all seasons.
