Our Verdict

The Nemo Roamer Double is a very comfy sleeping pad, though many will find it to be narrow for two people. At just 42 inches wide, it's only about 12 inches wider than some of our favorite single pads, putting the Roamer Double in the category of “tight for two, extra spacious for one.” We did love the packability of this mattress relative to its inflated size, and it even includes a more spacious storage duffel if you don't want to wrestle it into the tighter storage bag. This is ultimately a great choice for campers wanting an extra-large mattress for one person, or a more packable two-person model for a night or two.
REASONS TO BUY
Well-cushioned design
Easy to inflate/deflate
Large storage duffel
REASONS TO AVOID
Narrow for two people
Quite pricey
Less effective inflation bag

Our Analysis and Test Results

Comfort

In a world of thick, comfortable camping mattresses, the Nemo Roamer Double felt particularly cozy and soft, with a refined feel that avoids the slippery plastic sensation of many “plasticky surface” pads. However, it is particularly narrow for a two-person mattress, which might be a deal breaker for some.

You can adjust the feel of the Nemo Roamer Double across a wide range, from soft to firm, while still staying well off the ground, though the process isn't as precise as some competitors—you have to pull a plug and release air in larger increments, which takes practice to master. The fabric is slightly softer (and quieter), but you'll still hear some noise when moving around. Finally, the pad can bow more than expected when fully firm, though it flattens nicely under body weight or with a bit of air released.

This is a very well-cushioned mattress; we only wish it were wider for two.   Credit: Zach Lovell

Ease of Use

The NEMO Roamer Double is noticeably easier to roll up than many competitors, thanks to its open-cell foam, which doesn't fight back as much during packing, and it includes a generously large storage duffel that allows extra room if the Roamer isn't fully deflated. The three valves make deflation and packing easy, and the pad's relatively smaller dimensions make it easier to maneuver into place in a tent or vehicle.

The Roamer Double uses an inflation bag that requires one to blow into it, roll it shut, and then push the bag's air into the mattress. We found this somewhat cumbersome and recommend an electric pump if you use the Roamer Double often. Besides its inflation bag, the Roamer is a very user-friendly camping mattress.

The inflation system wasn't our favorite because it still requires you to use your lungs to fill the inflation bag.   Credit: Zach Lovell

Warmth

The NEMO Roamer Double is well-suited for 3-season camping (spring, summer, and fall). In testing on wet grass at around 40°F with a 40°F sleeping bag and no tent, it generally felt warm and comfortable to lie on. However, some coolness was noticeable where the sleeping bag directly touched the pad, especially when rolling over onto cooler spots.

The Roamer still performed well overall and should keep most people comfortable in typical 3-season conditions. More testing in different temperatures and with a tent would give an even clearer picture.

Versatility

The NEMO Roamer Double is surprisingly versatile beyond traditional car camping. It works well as a comfortable spot for an afternoon nap, a beach lounger, or even a cozy snuggle surface for movie nights and family gatherings.

In a pinch, it can serve as a decent guest bed for friends or family—while some people might prefer an elevated frame, most folks who are okay with camping gear won't mind sleeping on it. You can air travel with it as a carry-on, but it's not ideal because of its bulk and weight. Overall, it shines as a multi-purpose pad for both indoor and outdoor use.

Packed Size

The packed size of the Roamer Double is impressive for a two-person model and makes it stand out across the review's lineup in its sub-class. While we'd still steer you elsewhere if you need a double mattress for a longer trip, we loved this mattress's lower weight and packability.

The Roamer Double weighs an impressive 6.6 pounds, which is excellent for a two-person mattress. In its storage sack, it's about 22 inches long and 8 inches wide. Again, several mattresses are smaller, but in the two-person category, the Roamer is impressive.

Should You Buy the Nemo Roamer Double?

This is an excellent choice if you want plush comfort and easy handling in a double camping mattress. It feels exceptionally soft and refined, offers good 3-season warmth, and is noticeably lighter and easier to pack than other two-person options. While self-inflation is average and firmness adjustments take practice, its versatility for guest beds, playtime, and quick setup makes it a strong performer for car camping and family use.

What Other Camping Mattresses Should You Consider?

The Exped MegaMat Duo is a great alternative to the Roamer Double if you want a more spacious mattress that can actually fit two people. The trade-off? It's substantially heavier and bulkier. If the cost of the Roamer makes you hesitate, check out the Lost Horizon and consider buying two single pads and putting them together. This system will be less expensive and more comfy than the Roamer Double, but it'll take up quite a bit more room in your car.
