Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus Review

Although the Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus introduces a color touchscreen and multimedia messaging, we recommend other Garmin inReach Messenger models instead for their lighter design, superior battery, and stronger antenna

Our Verdict

The Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus builds on the trusted Iridium network, adding audio and photo messaging, as well as a color touchscreen. This touchscreen is the device's biggest advantage, allowing you to compose messages directly on the unit without relying on a smartphone. However, the screen can feel stubborn, meaning you'll likely still use the Garmin Messenger app for most communications. Unfortunately, the “3 Plus” version has grown in size and weight and lacks the battery and antenna upgrades found in other models. Because of this, we actually recommend the Garmin inReach Messenger Plus instead. It sheds the touchscreen for a more compact, lighter design with a significantly better battery and antenna.
REASONS TO BUY

We appreciate that this latest version of the now-venerable inReach Mini adds a usable touchscreen, audio, and photo messaging.

The touchscreen is the biggest upgrade to the inReach Mini. But how much does it matter to you?   Credit: Jediah Porter

The larger, color, touch-enabled screen means you can view and compose messages directly through the device better than on any other inReach product. Compared to other products on the market, this is the biggest advantage of the inReach Mini 3 Plus.

The inReach Mini taps into the proven Iridium network and Garmin's long experience with emergency messaging and dispatch.

Audio and photo messaging via satellite are things most deem unnecessary. But it is also nice to have. You can do it now with the inReach Mini 3 Plus.

Dislikes

We wish that the inReach Mini form factor hadn't crept up in size and weight with the “3 Plus” version. We also think this flagship product could have had a better battery upgrade. Finally, the antenna still isn't as large as that on other compact inReach options.

The touch screen is very small and more “stubborn” than other modern touch screens we are all accustomed to. Most will still do the vast majority of their satellite messaging through the Garmin Messenger app on their smartphone.
We wish the touch screen was more sensitive. It regularly refused to cooperate.   Credit: Jediah Porter

Should you buy the inReach Mini 3 Plus?

You will probably buy the inReach Mini 3 Plus for its familiar form and branding, as well as its upgraded functionality. The biggest advantage of this product, over anything on the market, is the touch screen interface that allows for some level of standalone use. That all is likely reason enough, but our testing indicates that a different inReach product is better for most people.

What Other Satellite Messenger Should You Consider?

If you are considering a Garmin device, we prefer the Garmin inReach Messenger Plus. Compared to the Mini 3 Plus, it is more compact, slightly lighter, and features a meaningfully better battery and antenna. The Mini 3 Plus's only real advantage is its touchscreen. While the Messenger Plus relies on a rudimentary (but functional) on-device interface if your phone fails, that superior screen on the Mini 3 Plus simply doesn't justify the higher price, added bulk, and reduced battery life.

The only true competitor to inReach devices is T Mobile T-Satellite. It offers superior coverage and functionality, seamlessly integrating with the smartphone you already carry. It is included in many T-Mobile plans, while AT&T and Verizon users can add it for $10 a month (which requires an unlocked phone, an available eSIM, and a 15-minute setup). However, you must ask yourself: Do you really want your backcountry safety to rely entirely on that one smartphone?
