Our Verdict
The Classic Swiss Army pocket knife is timeless. Although it's really more of a multi-tool, it's the first 'pocket knife' that generations have received as a rite of passage. Even into adulthood, looping this diminutive pocket knife onto your key ring will prove its value daily. The actual knife blade is passable at best, but it serves its purpose for easy tasks. Compact and handy, it's hard to deny the convenience of the Classic SD as an everyday carry.

Likes
The Classic SD is fun and non-threatening, which is one of our favorite parts about this pocket knife. Anywhere in public where pulling out a full-sized pocket knife could make someone uneasy, the SD is less likely to set off alarm bells. It's essentially a toy, albeit a toy with some serious utility (and a lifetime warranty to boot).
Its diminutive size is a double-edged sword to be sure, but as far as portability goes, the Classic SD simply can't be beat. It needs no pocket clip – instead, it's designed to hang unobtrusively on a set of keys, and we sometimes prefer to carry it in the smaller 5th pocket of a pair of jeans.

The Classic SD claims 7 functions (though including the 'key ring' in that list is a stretch): Toothpick, file, screwdriver, scissors, tweezers, and knife. This is all that 90% of the population will need on a daily basis. We particularly like the scissors – they may be tiny, but the leaf-spring design is impressively durable.

Dislikes
As useful as a time-tested tiny multi-tool is, its utility is severely limited by its size. The knife blade is just over 1mm thick and is really only capable of opening packages or gentle whittling. To be fair though, the proprietary stainless steel used has never chipped in our many years of testing.
There's very little grip to speak of – only two fingers fit on the handle, and without a blade lock, the Classic SD loses any safety points it may have gained from the smaller blade. Taken purely as a knife, the Classic SD isn't exactly a practical tool.

Should You Buy the Victorinox Classic SD Swiss Army?
Considering the functionality and convenience, the Classic SD is hands down one of the most versatile pocket knives anyone can own. As a mainstay in the junk drawer and a permanent resident on your key ring, its utility is undeniable. Just don't trick yourself into thinking that it's a realistic replacement for a full-sized pocket knife (or any other tool for that matter).
What Other Pocket Knives Should You Consider?
The Classic SD is one of a kind among the pocket knives we tested. If you like the idea of a mini knife but you want something that's a bit more practical, the CIVIVI Mini Praxis, CRKT Drifter, and Gerber Zilch are all compact, affordable options.
