Our Verdict

The Leki Legacy Lite is a reliable aluminum trekking pole known for its durability, ease of use, and affordable price for its quality. Its adjustment system is intuitive and holds securely during use, with occasional tightening easily managed in the field. The pole provides stability across various terrains and in snow, making it a solid choice for day hikes, snowshoeing, and most backcountry activities. Although a bit heavier and less compact than premium carbon or folding options, it offers excellent durability for the price. The only significant drawback is the smaller grip, which many testers found uncomfortable. Overall, it is a practical, straightforward option for hikers seeking the strength of aluminum at a moderate weight.

The Leki Legacy Lite is a lightweight, adjustable trekking pole made from high-strength aluminum (HTS 6.5) with a 3-section design and plastic “Speed Locks” for length changes. It comes in two adjustment sizes, 90-125 cm and 100–135 cm. It features Leki's ergonomic cork-composite grip and a carbide flex tip, and it's compatible with snow baskets sold separately.

Comfort

Comfort comes from the Legacy Lite's relatively light swing weight, which reduces arm fatigue on long days and makes it easier to maintain a natural rhythm.

The aluminum shaft has enough flex to absorb some trail vibration, which helps on extended rocky descents. The hand grips are decently comfortable for small hands, with straps that are soft and supportive rather than abrasive, and didn't cause any hot spots during extended use. However, the straps are thin, and we found ourselves wishing for a little more padding on long days.

Our major complaint about these poles is that the handgrip is petite. The top palm feels too small for most palms. The smaller grip felt undersized for our testers with larger hands, limiting comfort over extended use. Lightweight and balanced swing are definitely its biggest appeal for hikers.

Versatility

The Legacy Lite earns high marks for versatility thanks to a design that adapts well to a wide range of trail use without feeling overly specialized. At its weight, it's light enough for casual day hikes and summit pushes, but sturdy enough to remain comfortable carrying a loaded pack on longer backpacking trips. The telescoping aluminum construction also adds practical backcountry utility, packing down easily for travel, and it can also easily double as support for trekking-pole shelters and tarps.

Adjustable sizing further broadens its appeal as a versatile pole for families or hiking groups. It is easy to swap between users or fine-tune for changing terrain throughout the day. Our testers used them for a week of heavy guided snowshoeing in the Rocky Mountains. Although we did not have the add-on snow baskets, they easily paired with generic baskets and held up to heavy use in snowy conditions.

Construction Quality

The Legacy Lite is a well-made pole, with a burly aluminum shaft that feels built for repeated hard use rather than careful handling. The aluminum shafts hold up well to regular use and feel dependable on a range of terrain, making them a reliable choice for day hikes and general trail use. They are on the lighter end of the aluminum poles we tested, offering a good balance between weight, price, and strength.

The Speed Lock clamps are consistent, and we found that their strong clamping force holds the telescoping sections together through wet, icy, and high-impact conditions without noticeable slippage. They supported our weight on mountain trails, but with loaded packs, we noticed some bending in the aluminum during our lean tests.

Locking and Adjustability

The adjustment system is simple and easy to operate in the field. The pole uses Leki's Speed Lock+ external cam-style adjustment system, which tightens down with a lever rather than an internal twist mechanism. In practice, it's quick to set and visibly locks the shaft sections into place with a clamp. It is very reliable under load, and once locked, it resists slipping. Length changes are quick, secure, and require minimal fuss, which is especially useful when switching between uphills and downhills. We were even able to make changes with gloves on during snowshoe trips. The adjustable length range is also a nice feature when hiking in groups. They easily fit the taller and shorter participants on the hike (100-135 cm), and they also come in a smaller size (90-125 cm) if you have kiddos in tow.

The Legacy Lite is sturdy and rarely needs adjusting, and we appreciate that, if they do, they can be easily tightened in the field. You tighten it by adjusting the small tension screw on the lever lock. Open the lever, turn the screw (by hand or with a coin) to increase tension, then close the lever to check for a firm, secure hold. It's a quick process that can be done on the trail in under a minute. The telescoping poles are easy to extend, although we found that the bottom shaft can be a little tight and requires a bit more force to adjust.

Packed Size

The Legacy Lite is heavier and bulkier than carbon or folding options, which can be noticeable on longer hikes. When packed away, they measure 24.5 inches, which is a good 10 inches longer than folding models.

The poles pack down small enough to strap cleanly to the side of a larger backpack, although at roughly two feet, its three-section telescoping design isn't the most compact. For travel, scrambling sections, or storing poles when not in use, the packed size is manageable on larger backpacking setups but is cumbersome for smaller daypacks, carry-ons, or running vests.

Weight

At roughly 17 ounces per pair, the Legacy Lite sits in the middle of the pack of the poles in our lineup—noticeably not ultralight, but still far from heavy for a full-strength aluminum trekking pole. That weight reflects its focus on durability and stability rather than shaving every possible gram.

The Legacy Lite feels reassuringly solid when planted on firm or uneven terrain and yet has a light swing weight. Compared to lighter carbon models, we notice a bit more swing weight on long days, but in exchange, we consistently found that it has a sturdier, more impact-resistant feel.

Should You Buy The Leki Legacy Lite?

The Legacy Lite is a great pick for hikers who want a durable, easy-to-use pole at a reasonable price. Its sturdy build and reliable adjustability also make it a strong option for backpackers who use trekking poles to pitch shelters. It's also a good choice for families, thanks to its wide adjustability and reasonably lightweight feel. If you need ultralight gear for extended backcountry trips, there are lighter options, but for dependable performance and versatility, it's a solid choice. However, if you have large hands, this may not be the pole for you, as the grip is somewhat small.

What Other Should You Consider?

If you want the strength of aluminum, the Black Diamond Pursuit is a strong alternative if comfort is a top priority. It features a more ergonomic grip and a lighter overall feel, making it a better option for long days on the trail. Although the Leki Cressida FX Carbon is designed specifically for women or those with smaller hands, it offers a larger, more comfortable grip. It costs a bit more, but its folding design packs away much smaller, making it ideal for travel and backpacking.
