Our Analysis and Test Results
Comfort
The right balance of fit, padding, and ventilation makes the Vision comfortable to wear all day at the crag. Unlike other helmets we tested, there's padding right where you need it – in the front and on the top of the helmet – which makes it more comfortable to wear on its own. The fit is generous, so it never created pressure points, but it also adjusts easily to avoid a sloppy fit.
The Vision is on the lighter end, and it's relatively well ventilated, but it's not the lightest or the airiest helmet we tested. It's well-balanced, which is exactly what we want from a helmet – we want to put it on and forget about it.
Adjustability
The robust occipital strap on the back of the helmet is a plastic slider for easy adjustment. There's a huge range of adjustment in the Vision – in fact, our lead tester often needs the largest size helmet available, and even he had to tighten it all the way down. If you have a larger head or a lot of hair, then the Vision is the helmet for you.
You can't adjust how the straps fit around your ears, but the straps are large enough that they almost always sat comfortably on the sides of our heads – at the very least, they weren't annoying. If anything, this design is simple without detracting from comfort.
Weight
The size Large we tested weighed 235 grams. While it's no slouch in the weight department, it doesn't quite compete with the ultralight, 150-gram helmets we are seeing more and more.
It's a nice, comfortable weight for daily use – not too heavy, but not so light that it feels delicate. Even though Black Diamond added features that add weight, we think it creates a more usable helmet for folks looking for a premium, but long-lasting option.
Ventilation
The ventilation on the Vision is good, but not quite as good as some of the lightest helmets we tested. We hardly noticed any difference for most days out – it was only during long days in the sun that we noticed we were sweatier in the Vision than other similar helmets. Rather than a deal breaker, we see this as a good balance of breathability for summer rock climbing and warmth for ice climbing.
The Vision noticeably lacks some ventilation near the front. We understand this is an important area to protect, so it's somewhat reasonable that this design sacrifices some ventilation to protect your frontal lobe. While some other helmets successfully balance both protection and ventilation across your forehead, the Vision isn't one of them.
Features
A classic headlamp attachment system with a bungee on the back also fits goggles, if needed. The headlamp clips are pretty low-profile on the Vision, which makes them a bit hard to find without taking the helmet off. The pads inside the helmet are removable if you need more space, want to lighten the helmet, or take them out and wash them.
The Vision carries CE/EN and UIAA certifications for climbing helmets, but is not certified for ski mountaineering. Most climbing-specific helmets no longer meet the ski mountaineering certification, but it's worth noting for folks concerned about versatility.
Durability
The large ABS shell on top increases durability compared with a polycarbonate shell, which is what we commonly see on lighter helmets.
We think the Vision strikes a nice balance of durability and weight – it's ultimately not as tough as a full plastic hardshell, but it should be longer-lasting than lighter-weight foam helmets.
Should You Buy The Black Diamond Vision?
There are certainly lighter helmets, or more durable helmets, but we can't come up with a climbing helmet that balances weight, comfort, and durability better than the Vision. It does a nice job of bridging the gap between heavy, durable hardshells and ultralight foam helmets – it may lean a bit to the lighter side, but it does so without sacrificing durability or adjustability. As a do-it-all type of helmet, there's no better choice than the Vision.
What Other Climbing Helmets Should You Consider?
The Petzl Meteor offers similar performance at a lower cost. It's not quite as comfortable, but it is better ventilated. But anyone looking to go really lightweight should check out the Blue Ice Blast – it's noticeably lighter than the Vision, which makes it that much more comfortable, although it does sacrifice a bit of durability. But we think everyone should compare these helmets against the Metolius Hardtop, which directly competes with these top options for almost half the price.
