Our Verdict

The Black Diamond 9.9 features a thick diameter with a limited amount of versatility. The rope feels stiff and rigid at first but quickly softens to a more supple feel after a few days out at the crag. Despite the thicker diameter, we found this rope less durable than others with similar weight and thickness, perhaps this is due to the lack of dry treatment that also allows the rock to absorb debris from the crag. The design has a clearly-defined middle mark and is available in a variety of lengths ranging from 40-70 meters, but the overall thickness and lack of dry treatment limit the versatility. That said, if you're a beginner climber and just looking for a rope to primarily climb indoors, this could be a worthy consideration.

For a thick 9.9mm diameter, the Black Diamond 9.9 actually surprised us with how well it handled, despite how close it is to the maximum thickness that can be used within a GriGri belay device. When we first started climbing on the 9.9 the sheath texture was pretty rough to the touch and felt stiff to handle, although it did soften quickly with more use.

The rope handles pretty well despite it's thicker diameter. We just wish the sheath didn't get dirty so quickly.   Credit: Trish Matheny

Although not the most feature-rich design that we've tested, it does include a clearly defined middle mark and is available in a range of sizes from 40-70 meters in length.

Dislikes

While Black Diamond advertises this rope as a durable workhorse that's built to withstand everyday use, this wasn't our experience. Even with moderate use, the sheath started to soften and show signs of wear, revealing a sub-optimal quality, despite Black Diamond's claim that it can withstand “a barrage of use.” The sheath also easily absorbs dirt and aluminum when lowering your climber, making us put our gloves on to keep our hands clean even during the first day of us. While it lacks some durability, it's not a bad choice for those after a lead rope for the gym.

Should You Buy the Black Diamond 9.9?

If you're seeking an entry level climbing rope that's available in a range of sizes, the Black Diamond 9.9 may be worth your consideration. It handles pretty well despite its thicker diameter and would perform well in more controlled environments like lead climbing in the gym, rather than being purchased as your outdoor crag workhorse due to its limited durability.

What Other Climbing Ropes Should You Consider?

The Black Diamond 9.9 is a decent option for anyone after a thicker diameter rope without a dry treatment that handles well and performs best indoors due to sub-optimal durability. The Sterling VR9 9.8 is our favorite design for a crag workhorse thanks to it's thicker diameter and dry treatment that effectively protects the sheath. The Mammut 9.5 Crag Classic has been the overall favorite of our testing team for years thanks to its durable construction and versatile thickness. It doesn't have a dry treatment so more easily absorbs dirt from the base of the routes as well as aluminum from the mussy hooks, however, it will last you for multiple seasons.
