Our Analysis and Test Results
A classic rain boot capable of commuting through puddles, keeping feet protected in the yard, and rinsing off for dinner in town, the Kamik Heidi 2 ticks all the boxes. Amongst the lowest-priced rainboots in our review, this pair impresses us with year-round versatility and practicality. These boots are also 100% recyclable at the end of their lifespan, constructed of entirely vegan materials, and free of phthalate, synthetics, or latex- an impressive list of considerations for a boot that doesn't hesitate in rugged conditions.
Performance Comparison
Weather Protection
With a 12-inch flood height- from the bottom of the sole to the top of the boot- these waterproof, synthetic rubber boots offer impressive protection despite scoring a tad lower than taller options. This shaft height is a great sweet spot for easy, practical, daily use and adequate coverage without overwhelming the legs with rubber. The flood height has not been compromised since there are no cutouts, zippers, or extraneous design features; the sleek synthetic rubber construction keeps feet completely dry up to the tip top of the boot shaft.
With a mouth circumference measuring 15 inches, the Heidi 2 is easy to step into hands-free, lending ease to garden chores and yard work. Offering an average mouth circumference that accommodates a range of pant styles, weather protection can be addressed appropriately, season to season. In warm temperatures exceeding 70°F, our feet stayed moderately ventilated, lending to comfort in a wide range of applications. This model is more than sufficient for spending time out in the rain, working in the garden, crossing shallow streams, and even jumping through puddles.
Comfort
This boot has a simple yet durable synthetic rubber upper and a very thin nylon lining. The foot box has a relatively basic, removable CushyStep Everyday EVA foam footbed. While custom insoles can compensate for the lack of underfoot support, this boot proved more comfortable than expected. The fit, ease of taking on and off, and mobility factors were all tested without gripe. Weighing in at only 2.8 pounds for a size 8 pair, they are pretty lightweight for their height, which proves to be a perk when they feel less of a burden after wearing them all day. The rubber uppers are reasonably flexible and short enough to allow for adequate movement of the legs as you walk.
We tested the Heidi 2 barefoot, with socks, in warm temperatures and cold temperatures, in pouring rain, moving water, and in standing water. They were most comfortable with socks instead of barefoot and were exceedingly walkable, even though most rainboots were not designed for long mileage. Miles of pavement and stretches of gravel paths revealed these boots' comfort.
The Heidi 2 runs true to size. We sized up in our first review, and, as expected, this caused some slight heel slippage. In our update, we sized true to size, and they offered a nice fit with or without socks. When worn barefoot, they clap with each step, as a classic rainboot is designed to accommodate a wide range of applications and fits. The most significant complaint found across customer reviews is regarding foot support. However, this is a minor drawback unless you plan to walk long distances or perform rough outdoor work all day.
Traction
The Heidi 2 is one of the highest-performing boots in traction, and we are certainly glad that fashion didn't out-prioritize functionality in this case. We tend to assume that the more traditionally sporty-looking boots will reign in this category, but, quite the contrary — this stylish competitor stood out strong and held up to the best of the best. Compared to its predecessor, the Heidi 2 has a less defined outsole, presenting a sleeker appearance for urban wear.
When testing in icy, snowy conditions, in the river, and across wet grass, it isn't necessarily about pinpointing the exact point of failure for us but whether or not the tread instills confidence with every step. Every model is flawed, but we found these reliable under various circumstances. Consistently stable, we are impressed with their performance despite their relative simplicity. This might have to do with the sensitivity allowed- the outsole isn't too thick to prevent you from sensing friction across the terrain.
With prominent tread, the Heidi 2 performs well over both flat and inclined terrain. The slimy rocks in a river environment knock a point off for these. However, chances are, you are most likely using rain boots in urban or suburban settings, where flat surfaces abound. This model is also not intentionally made for hiking, and with thinner soles, we wouldn't recommend it for extensive mileage. Across farmland, the tread maintained a predictable footing unless the terrain erred toward sloped mud. The flat outsole suctioned in deep mud, as air couldn't escape through a more aggressive tread pattern or raised heel. Still, knowing the tread will keep you steady in rougher terrain is comforting.
Warmth
Made for mild weather, it is no surprise that the Heidi 2 yields only average scores for warmth. This metric measures how well the boots retain heat throughout the day and during cold weather. The performance is comfortable and not too warm, with ideal temperatures between 50 and 75°F. The overall comfort of the Heidi was only notable when temperatures fell below 40°F, especially at or below freezing due to the thin nature of the rubber.
Consider an intentionally insulated boot if you're searching for a contender that will be sufficiently cozy in colder conditions. Made without any insulation other than the inner nylon lining, these boots are better suited for temperate zones, places with distinct rainy seasons, and minimal snow. They are also great for working in the garden during the summer as you can get away with wearing much thinner socks or barefoot, although, as we found, socks are recommended for adequate fit and overall comfort.
Style
The Heidi 2 comes in many glossy colors that we enjoy, but always check the manufacturer's website for the season's current picks.
We tested a deep red color, one like the color of a lovely Cabernet Sauvignon. True to what photos show online, we are happy with this block of color encased in a transparent, molded rubber. The black outsole contrasts with the boot, which provides a simple yet versatile look. The shorter shaft height allows pants to fit inside more easily. It is nice to be able to choose a more elegant boot when dressing for restaurants or evening events. Our lead tester expressed that the sheen of the red was very popular among her friends.
Fit
Kamik boots come in whole sizes 6-11. As is standard with most rainwear, heel slippage is likely when half-sizes are unavailable. This model is no exception. Fortunately, this brand runs consistently true to size. Kamik recommends sizing up for those who wear half-sizes. Our lead tester is a size 7.5; with the Heidi 2, we purchased a size 8 and were happy to find it suitable. Because of this, there is space for wearing much thicker socks.
With thin socks, the fit and comfort are still adequate for all-day wear. The foot box fits snugly around the foot, so if your feet are of high volume, we agree that it is best to size up. If you purchase an alternate insole, you will likely want to ensure your feet don't become cramped, which we feel might happen with this lean foot box.
The mouth circumference is less concerning for athletic or bulky calves, which is often a point of concern with rainboots. The Heidi 2 is an ideal height for incredible weather protection, a range of pant styles, and overall fit.
Value
A genuine bargain for those wanting a blend of style and functionality, the Heidi 2 provides more than the basics, adding up to an excellent rain boot — all without emptying your pockets. These boots are a high-value item for a far lower price than others. They offer classic rain boot must-haves, such as weather protection and style, without compromising traction, high-quality materials, and overall comfort.
Should You Buy the Kamik Heidi 2?
The Kamik Heidi 2 is a tough competitor and a great product at a fantastic price. We were impressed with the hands-free step-in, lightweight vegan construction, and removable insoles to either increase support or keep the inside of the boots dry between wear. From commutes in urban environments to garden chores and rainy dog walks, the Heidi 2 rainboots keep your feet dry while upholding stylish appeal.
