Comfort and Fit

The moment our feet met the Saucony Ride 18, we knew we were in for a special kind of ride. There's an immediate sense of comfort and balance in this shoe, one that feels almost as if you've been running in it since the very first day of your training.

The updated Ride isn't an ultra-plush runner, nor does it offer a bare bones level of a running experience. In a balance reminiscent of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the Ride's cushioning and comfort come together in a way that feels, quite simply, just right.

We tested the standard width model and found the forefoot to be slightly tapered. While it never felt restrictive, runners with broader feet may notice a snugger fit. Fortunately, Saucony also offers a wide version, which should effectively eliminate any issues with the narrower toe box. Runners who want a lot of extra toe box real estate might find the build of the Ride a bit restrictive, though it does fall within the bounds of offering “standard” in terms of width. You know your foot best! If you want a lot of forefoot space for your toes to splay, the Ride might disappoint. If you like the sensation of an average road running shoe, the slight extra taper of the Ride's forefoot likely won't impact your experience with it.

Cushioning

The updated cushioning system of the Saucony Ride, powered by PWRRUN+ foam, creates a soft yet lively platform that adapts seamlessly to a variety of paces and distances. This, in part, is what makes this shoe such a standout choice for new runners or those looking to purchase a single pair of all-encompassing road running shoes.

The undercarriage of the Ride 18 absorbs shock on longer efforts, while still providing enough rebound to keep your stride feeling smooth and efficient. The midsole's moderate stack height delivers steady support without weighing you down, maintaining a grounded connection mile after mile.

What's most impressive is how quietly effective the cushioning feels. Without feeling bulky, this shoe provides underfoot cushion for runners of all kinds. Whether you're easing through recovery miles, picking up the pace for a tempo run, or clocking everyday training sessions, the Ride delivers consistent comfort and fluid performance. This shoe exemplifies versatility, offering a balanced ride that feels natural, supportive, and ready for whatever you throw at it.

Breathability

The updates to the Ride have made it a notably breathable road running shoe, ideal for warm-weather runs.

Part of the magic of the Saucony Ride lies in its ability to feel completely supportive while still allowing plenty of breathability. Many shoes with thick, stable side walls often pair them with heavier upper materials, which can trap heat and reduce airflow. The Ride 18 addresses this issue with its engineered mesh upper, which features carefully placed perforations that allow heat and moisture to escape. This thoughtful design keeps feet cool and comfortable even on longer runs or warmer days. Runners benefit from a secure, stable fit that doesn't sacrifice ventilation, making each mile feel easier and more enjoyable.

While heavily discounted on Saucony's website, they do make a “summer” version of the Ride 18. The summer version features an even thinner, more breathable upper, primed for summer running.

Traction

The outsole of the Ride 18 is engineered for dependable traction and lasting performance.

Saucony utilizes a rubber compound across its outsole that provides firm traction across various road conditions, from slick asphalt to light gravel. This helps the Ride maintain steady footing, even in damp weather. The rubber is thoughtfully distributed across key impact zones, reinforcing high-wear areas without adding unnecessary weight. This design enhances grip and improves overall durability, keeping the shoe feeling stable and lively even after heavy mileage. For runners who want one pair that can transition easily between everyday training and longer efforts in various weather conditions, the Ride 18's outsole provides a confident, road-ready foundation that stands up to repeated use while maintaining smooth, consistent performance.

Should You Buy the Saucony Ride 18?

The updated Saucony Ride 18 earns its place as a dependable choice for a wide range of runners thanks to its balanced feel, durability, and reasonable price. It delivers a smooth, comfortable experience that even beginners will appreciate, offering just the right mix of cushioning and responsiveness for everyday miles. This shoe doesn't rely on flashy tech or gimmicks; it simply performs well, run after run. Whether you're logging easy recovery miles, walking your dog on the weekends, or picking up the pace for a tempo workout, the Ride 18 transitions effortlessly between efforts. Its understated design hides a quietly capable performer that gets the essential elements right. For runners seeking a no-fuss, go-to daily trainer that feels reliable and ready for anything, the Ride 18 is an awesome fit.

What Other Running Shoes Should You Consider?

Brooks designs a slew of shoes that offer similarly traditional fit patterns. The soft and smooth Brooks Glycerin 22, the stability-focused Brooks Adrenaline GTS 24, and the ready-for-anything Brooks Ghost 17 all offer slightly wider toe boxes than the Ride 18, and excellence in their own ways. Any one of these options by Brooks would make a great addition to your running arsenal, preparing you to hit the roads with durable support. For a more cushioned ride, the Asics Novablast 5 offers similar reliability in an energetic package. In the case of the Novablast, though, the midsole height and bounce make it a less traditional-feeling shoe, which might be a dealbreaker for some runners.
