The dual-cord design of the Uneek is an interesting twist on the classic sandal and is surprisingly comfortable. The soft cord forms to various foot shapes, and the bungee securement holds them in place while still allowing some stretch and preventing binding. A microfiber footbed is soft on the skin and prevents slippage or sliding when wet or when sidehilling.
These are versatile sandals that are comfortable for running errands all day or for seeking out beautiful views on light-to-moderate trails. The open cords allow for fantastic ventilation, and should you decide to traverse some water, they drain and dry quickly. The dual cord wrap wraps around the entire foot, providing more protection than most sandals. The cord design is also more visually appealing and comes in a variety of colors, making it a good option for casual evenings with friends.
Dislikes
Though the open cord design provides a comfortable feel and airflow, it also leaves the foot exposed to debris on the trails. Sand, rocks, sticks, and grass can easily get caught between the cords or get underfoot. Once the debris reaches the footbed, the only way to remove it is to take off the sandals, which can be inconvenient. The lugs for traction, if you can call them lugs, are shallow. The lugs have sipes for traction on wet surfaces, but the lack of aggressive tread doesn't provide confidence on steeper terrain. These sandals are best suited for urban use or mild trails, rather than scrambling over boulders.
Should You Buy the Keen Uneek?
A different approach to sandals, the Keen Uneek provides comfort and stability with a clean appearance for daily use. The flexible upper wraps around your foot and provides a snug enclosure while maintaining good airflow. The tread pattern is shallow yet performs well on streets, trails, and wet docks or boats. Not ideal for really aggressive trails, the open cords can trap debris, which is a likelihood with all sandal designs. A moderate cushion midsole and microfiber footbed are comfortable enough for all-day use, making this a solid option for transitions from errands to camping and travel.
What Other Sandals Should You Consider?
The Uneek definitely stands out as an interesting design with many benefits. For a versatile sandal with more support, the Chaco Z/2 Classic and Bedrock Cairn Evo both provide excellent versatility and traction. If something stylish is the main goal, the Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed is a timeless classic that can't be beat.
