Our Verdict
Runners who want the ultimate balance of thick protection, wide stability, and long-lasting durability needn't look beyond the excellence that is the updated Asics Trabuco 14. While the fit can initially feel a bit off, runners who stick with this shoe will find its diamond-in-the-rough-ness ideal for trail excursions of all kinds. Strapping on the Trabuco 14 made us feel like GI Jane meets an educational forest ranger, ready to tromp through dense jungle trails while looking like we know exactly which mushrooms are edible. Needless to say, this shoe may not showcase the agility nimble runners seek. If ol' reliable is what you're after, we recommend taking the Trabuco for a spin.

Comfort and Fit
The Asics Trabuco 14 feels like slipping into a rugged pair of hiking shoes crossed with a slightly oversized trail runner. They are big, hefty, and unapologetically substantial. Their cushioning feels generous, and the supportive midsole gives a stable, grounded feel underfoot, making long miles and rough terrain feel less punishing. The fit leans slightly snug in the heel and midfoot, helping lock your foot in place, while the toe box has enough room to let your toes splay comfortably.
Though the ASICS Trabuco 14 is a large, hefty shoe, we found that our usual trail shoe sizing still worked best. We normally go a half-size up from our regular 'going out' shoes, and that half-size fit performed well in the Trabuco 14, though we likely would have been just as comfortable in our standard shoe size.
Straight out of the box, the fit of the Trabuco 14 is a bit off-putting. The arch feels oddly placed, and the forefoot platform is noticeably wider than the actual toe box. Despite these misgivings, our testers grew to love the solidity and toughness of this updated pair of trail runners. Runners who want solid support, plush padding, and confidence‑inspiring stability, the Trabuco 14 delivers a reassuringly substantial fit.

Stability
With a base this wide, the Trabuco feels stable, reassuringly so, thanks to its structured midsole and firm, supportive frame. Its wider base and well-engineered midfoot cradle keep your foot secure over uneven terrain, while the slightly stiffer heel and reinforced overlays help prevent rollover on tricky trails. Even on rocky descents or root-strewn paths, the Trabuco 14 maintains a grounded, confident feel without being overly rigid. It strikes a strong balance between cushioning and control, making it a dependable choice for runners who prioritize stability and confidence on unpredictable trail surfaces.

Traction
The Trabuco 14 grips trails like they own them. Its 3.6 mm multidirectional lugs dig into dirt, roots, and gravel with quiet authority, giving confidence on climbs and descents. The outsole's durable rubber compound, AsicsGrip, strikes a balance between stickiness and longevity. It is not a super tacky rock magnet like some Vibram outsoles on the market, but it handles slick surfaces and packed trails with ease. The Trabuco 14's traction is reliable, thoughtfully engineered, and just the right amount of gutsy, letting you hit your optimal pace without worrying about slipping.

Foot Protection
The updated Trabuco offers a pretty solid shield. Underfoot, a flexible rock plate keeps sharp stones and jagged roots from slowing you down, while the midsole foam cushions each step without feeling mushy. Up top, reinforced overlays and a sturdy toe cap guard against accidental kicks, letting you charge across your preferred terrain without flinching. The Trabuco is a big, hefty shoe, but all that mass works in your favor: you feel protected, grounded, and ready to tackle anything the trail throws at you.

Weight
Despite feeling like a monster shoe, the Trabuco only weighs in at 7.80 ounces per women's size 6.5 shoe. This isn't exactly on the lightest end of the spectrum, but it certainly isn't the chunkiest shoe we've tested.

Should You Buy the Asics Trabuco 14?
If you want a shoe that settles on your feet and can go for miles, the Asics Trabuco 14 is a good place to start looking. While at first its fit feels a bit strange, it grows on you and has the potential to become your new favorite trail companion. Well tractioned and just plush enough, the updated Trabuco is a worthy shoe to consider.

What Other Trail Running Shoes Should You Consider?
For a more universally comfortable fit, the Hoka Speedgoat 7 might be a better trail running fit for you. If you want a similarly well-tractioned shoe, the Saucony Peregrine 16 is a high-scoring option that feels a bit more like a traditional running shoe than the Asics Trabuco 14. If you want the ultimate rugged trail shoe that embodies much of what the Trabuco does but in an even gnarlier package, the La Sportiva Bushido II is a protection and traction powerhouse ready to tackle the trails when you are.
