Our Verdict

The Hoka Speedgoat 7 has undergone numerous facelifts in recent years, with each change culminating in creating a shoe that is totally runnable. The updated Speedgoat offers slightly more control and comfort. This upgraded comfort comes from its redesigned tongue and foam, both of which make a massive impact on the trails. From brand-new gravel hikers to technical trail veterans, the updated Speedgoat is a solid choice. Outfitted with reliable traction, a stable and snug fit, and a keen eye for comfort. Runners seeking the most tech-forward option might find the soft solidity of the Speedgoat to feel a bit dull, but this updated Hoka shoe comes with our testers' most well-rounded recommendations.

Comfort and Fit

Hoka has brought back what we like to call its “legacy feel” with the updated Speedgoat. Like Hoka shoes of the past, it feels capable and comfortable from the moment you slip it on.

Unlike some of the more rigid, rugged trail running shoes, the Speedgoat doesn't require a long break-in period. Instead, it welcomes your feet, cradles the heels in a stable position 3 mm above the toes, and instantly feels right at home.

The tongue isn't well-padded, but it extends high enough up the forefoot to provide comfort and protection. The tongue is attached to the inner portion of the shoe on both sides, further ensuring comfort and security as you run. The upper RPET woven textile, a durable and sustainability-minded fabric, feels light, breathable, and flexible across the upper of the shoe, further enhancing its overall comfort.

The Speedgoat 7 offers a standard fit, with sizing that matches most US shoe sizes. While some runners may not appreciate the settled-in feeling of the low-riding heel, runners who want inherent stability in a shoe that centers around comfort and control, we recommend checking out what the Speedgoat has to offer.

Stability

When assessing trail running shoes through the lens of stability, we like to look at a few key features. For one, we look at how firmly the foot sits in the shoe. Then, we unpack the relationship between the heel height and forefoot height. Finally, we take into account any specific lateral structures a shoe may contain.

In the case of the Speedgoat 7, most of its stability comes from its wide, low heel. Sitting just 3 mm above the toe, the Hoka Speedgoat provides the opposite of a platform-shoe feel, keeping runners close to the ground for a connected, responsive ride. The rear outsole flares slightly, widening the base and enhancing support without relying on built-in stability structures. This design allows the shoe to feel both lively and secure, offering natural balance while maintaining agility on uneven terrain. Even on technical trails, the Speedgoat delivers a stable, confident ride, combining low-to-the-ground responsiveness with a broad, supportive footprint. It's a shoe that feels planted without feeling rigid, rewarding active, engaged running.

Traction

Adding to this stability is the Speedgoat's Vibram Megagrip outsole. Bitey and sticky, the outsole of this trail runner is equipped to handle most terrain types.

The Hoka Speedgoat 7 features a Vibram outsole that delivers reliable grip on smooth granite and other hard surfaces, giving runners confidence when traction matters most. Its slightly flared rear outsole enhances control and support, especially on unstable scree or loose terrain, without adding unnecessary bulk. The 3.5 mm lugs provide just the right amount of bite, engaging effectively on trails while remaining unobtrusive on paved or smoother surfaces. This balanced traction design allows the Speedgoat to handle everything from gravel paths to more technical trails, making it a versatile choice for runners who want a single shoe that performs across a wide range of conditions. Its combination of grip, stability, and adaptability earns it high marks for overall trail performance.

Foot Protection

The undercarriage of the Speedgoat 7 is fairly plush, sitting on a platform that is around 32 mm in height.

The Hoka Speedgoat's generous underfoot height and cushioning act as a comfortable crash pad, softening footfalls and making long runs enjoyable. This protective layer ensures the shoe remains comfortable and forgiving over extended efforts. The updated upper weave adds an extra level of defense by deflecting trail debris, making it more durable and protective than previous versions. While the toe cap isn't the stiffest on the market, the combination of the flared-outsole, extended toe-bumper rubber, and overall design provides reliable protection for most trail conditions. Together, these features create a shoe that balances comfort, safety, and performance on a variety of trails.

Weight

At 7.64 ounces per women's size 6.5 shoe, the Speedgoat 7 is fairly standard in terms of weight.

It doesn't weigh enough to feel heavy during runs, but it also isn't light enough to feel weightless. The heft of this shoe provides plenty of protection and support without holding you back.

Should You Buy the Hoka Speedgoat 7?

We think that the updated Hoka Speedgoat 7 is one of the best trail running shoes that Hoka is making right now. The Hoka Speedgoat strikes an impressive balance between durability and comfort, making it versatile enough to handle serious training sessions while remaining gentle and approachable for nature walks or casual trail adventures. Its low profile paired with a moderately high stack offers a responsive, protective ride, though this combination may not suit every runner's preferences or mechanics. For those who find the fit and feel work well for them, the updated Speedgoat delivers exceptional performance, reliable stability, and cushioning that holds up over long miles. With its thoughtful design and proven versatility across a range of trail conditions, we can confidently recommend this Hoka shoe as a go-to option for committed trail runners.

What Other Trail Running Shoes Should You Consider?

If you like the idea of a highly comfortable shoe but want something a little more suited for crossing over into road running territory, the Hoka Challenger 8 is an ideal shoe to consider. The Challenger stands about 5 mm higher than the Speedgoat, and it is built for enduring comfort. If you like the idea of a Hoka-made shoe but want something a bit simpler and better suited for trail walking with the occasional speed pickup, the Hoka Torrent 4 might be an ideal match for you. The updated Altra Experience Wild offers a similar level of comfort as the Speedgoat, but with a wider forefoot for added comfort.
