Our Verdict
Our Analysis and Test Results
With precise edge hold and turning engagement, impressive float in powder, and reliability through challenging lines and variable conditions, the Rome Ravine Pro took home the award for our Editors' Choice. This board guarantees a solid option for riders aiming to get after it with style and ease, whatever “it” ends up being for the day. This board was a blast to ride, and it was hard to unstrap out of it. We could've ridden it all season if we didn't have other boards to test, as without a doubt it would rip from early-season days to slushy spring riding.
Edging
Locking into a turn, the Rome Ravine Pro feels like a trustworthy platform to dig your deepest carves into any terrain of your choosing. Rome's “Free the Ride” camber consists of camber at the tail, flat beneath the feet, and rocker at the nose, offering riders torsional response and locked-in edges. This board design is a perfect blend of power and precision that left us smiling after every turn.
The Rome Ravine Pro scored well in our edging test, as it was able to transition from one edge to another with ease. The shape of this board has a directional tri-radial sidecut, which provides performance, power, and stability throughout the entire turn without any compromises. The directional taper of this board allows you to lock a turn on either your edge or heel and see it to completion, holding strong the whole way through. Additionally, the taper provides a smooth transition from heel to toe, linking your turns together with style.
Float in Powder
With the camber loaded at the back of the board and the rocker lifting up the nose at the front, you can enjoy all the benefits of ripping through powder turns without having to remind yourself to lean back and not nose-dive. This board does the work for you thanks to the mindfully constructed shape.
The directional taper towards the nose offers riders the ability to stay afloat in powder, as the bigger scooped nose floats above the surface, and the tapered tail sinks just enough to guide the direction of your line with confidence. The Rome Ravine Pro is constructed with a blend of poplar and paulownia wood core, creating a light and lively board that is easy to keep afloat on the deepest of days.
Stability at Speed
Who doesn't love straight lining from the top to the bottom of a run? Well, not someone on a board that gets speed wobbles and chatter. The Rome Ravine Pro eases all those worries and provides a trustworthy board with minimal chatter; an ideal combination when it comes to hill bombing. The Ravine rips, and it likes to rip fast.
The Rome Ravine Pro tied with the Cardiff Lynx for the top rating in stability at speed, receiving a near-perfect score. This board has a need for speed, and if you're drawn to straight lining and ripping at top speeds, it's an easy choice to add the Ravine Pro to your quiver. Geared towards all mountain freestyle riders, you can rip out of stomped big mountain lines and straight line to the parking lot knowing this board will provide a trustworthy line from top to bottom. The combination of carbon fiber inlay, a rocker/camber combo, and tapered shape creates the perfect recipe for speed, minus the wobbles.
Playfulness
Playfulness has its own category in our testing procedures because ultimately, the reason we all snowboard is because it's fun, and we'd be failing at our job if we were to recommend a board that can't deliver on that front. The Rome Ravine Pro gets the stamp of approval for a guaranteed good time.
For having a rather stiff flex rating, the Rome Ravine Pro still offered us a lot of play and response to popping off side hits and buttering down the mountain. Directional Double Hotrod carbon fiber infused at the tail allows for easy pop, sending you off your dream cliff drops and side hits. We took this board ripping through tree runs, airing the sides of cat tracks, and even hitting some jumps in the park; it understood the assignment across all the playful terrain we put it up against.
Pop and Jumping
It's hard to keep this board on the ground, as the Rome Ravine Pro is a blast to pop and jump. Though we don't feel this is an ideal park board due to its stiffness, it is, however, an excellent choice for taking off jumps, popping ollies, and catching air off of side hits.
We found the camber tail, flat underfoot, and rocker nose profile of this board to be a trifecta for easy popping and jumping. The camber loaded in the tail makes for a ready-to-pop response, while the rocker in the nose, in addition to its diamond 3D shape, provides a butter platform like no other. Meanwhile, the flat base between the feet keeps you engaged with the board and keeps you comfortable enough to experiment with new tricks and creative lines.
Should You Buy the Rome Ravine Pro?
The Rome Ravine Pro is a solid snowboard that will have you ripping like a pro, heck it's even in the name. If you are determined to get after carving deep turns across all terrain and stomping that big line you've been eyeing at the resort, this is the board for you.
What Other Snowboard Should You Consider?
If sending it off cliff drops and hill bombing isn't penciled on your to-do list, then the Rome Ravine Pro may feel slightly too aggressive for you. We suggest the Yes Airmaster 3D for a freeride-minded boarder who is more inclined to rip lines on the groomers and mob down the cat track, popping off every side hit in sight.
