Bellroy Tokyo Wonder Tote Review

Comfort and Fit

The Wonder Tote is basic and uncomplicated, just two oversized shoulder straps connected to a large tote. It can't compete with a backpack in terms of comfort or fit, but as a general tote bag, it still received average marks for this metric.

The Bellroy fits most body types. It can be carried by hand or worn on the shoulder. Its long nylon handles are complemented with rubber grip strips to help them stay firmly attached to the shoulder. Those who used the Bellroy noted that it was comfortable enough on most days, but commented that this comfort diminished when the tote was more heavily packed. The shoulder straps have no padding, so the increased weight created more pressure on the shoulders.

Laptop Protection

We gave the Bellroy average scores for this metric. It's well-made and durable, but we feel its ability to protect isn't equal to many of the other bags in our lineup.

The Tokyo Wonder Tote has a designated laptop sleeve, and we liked that it had a padded false bottom. This is a desirable feature for any laptop bag because it protects the computer from accidental drops or heavy set downs. The laptop storage is a wide-open sleeve located in the main compartment, which makes for convenient accessibility. We liked that it's padded, but we feel a designated zippered pouch would offer better protection.

During our spray tests, the Bellroy wasn't as water-resistant as we had hoped. Its zippers are recessed, so they sit below the fabric line. We found that this design created trough-like areas that allow water to pool and seep through the zipper into the bag's interior.

Storage and Organization

Tote bags like this one are generally basic and straightforward. The Bellory doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but it still offers enough to receive slightly decent marks.

The Tokyo Wonder Tote offers three large compartments for storing everything from pens to documents. There's also a key clip and two interior water-bottle holders. However, on the whole, this tote leans heavily toward a wide-open, minimalistic storage system. Some of our testers loved this while others did not.

Ease of Use

No sizing, buckling, tightening, or clipping required. Just grab the Tokyo Wonder Tote and go. It's a piece of cake.

We loved the freedom this tote offers. What we loved the most was the ability to access things while on the go. Unlike a backpack, the Bellroy can be unzipped while you're still moving. And, this tote's open storage concept makes it easy to find what you are looking for without having to fumble through a million zippered pockets. Everything is pretty much at your fingertips.

Versatility

We feel the Bellroy Tokyo Wonder Tote offers a specific style and function. Many of our testers loved having a more fashionable mode for carrying their laptop and supplies.

Although this bag may not appeal to everyone, we still think it offers above-average versatility. It's available in a few subdued colors and it offers a classier look for carrying work essentials. It also has a luggage pass-through, so it can slide onto a carry-on trolley handle, and there's just enough extra space to carry a snack, scarf, book, or other extras.

The Bellroy has two internal water-bottle sleeves (one sleeve on each end). We used them often. The sleeves are deep, but they don't expand well. And, if you are used to carrying larger bottles, they'll fit in this bag, but they're often too tall, so the bag can't be zipped closed.   Credit: Jason Wanlass

Should You Buy the Bellroy Tokyo Wonder Tote?

If you're looking for a trendy way to transport your laptop, we think you'll like the Bellroy Tokyo Wonder Tote. It doesn't offer the most protection or a detailed storage system, but it looks great and it's super easy to use. This tote won't appeal to everyone, but if you're tired of bulky backpacks, we think this tote is right up your alley. Our testing panel included students, working professionals, and busy parents — all of whom thought the Bellroy was unique, convenient, and easy to use.
