Security
The Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini is the ex-heavyweight champion of bike security. While it still carries a Sold Secure Gold rating and a perfect 10/10 on Kryptonite's own safety scale. It uses a massive 18mm hardened steel shackle that laughs at hand tools. This lock was the pinnacle of security for years, but it hasn't been updated to address the increased risk of angle-grinder attacks. While it's significantly heavier than your average lock, it's backed by a $5,000 anti-theft protection guarantee, making it a reasonable choice for higher-risk environments where a standard U-lock just won't suffice.
Impervious to hacksaws, drills, car jacks, brute force attacks, the “Fahgettaboudit” was no match for our angle grinder. We made two cuts through both sides of the shackle in 43 seconds in our lab. While this is impressive for a typical U-lock, the newer, angle-grinder-resistant locks take 6-9 minutes to breach and require multiple changes of cutting discs.
Ease of Transport
The Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini is remarkably compact for storage in a bag or pannier, but its dense 4.5 lb weight makes it impossible to ignore during a commute. Like the New York Standard, Kryptonite includes a frame mount that lets you quickly stash the lock in your bike's main triangle. The lock's sheer mass is its greatest defensive asset and its biggest ergonomic drawback, as the weight is substantial enough to be felt—or break your toe if you drop it.
Ease of Use
The Fahgettaboudit Mini sacrifices some versatility for its compact form, earning lower marks for general ease of use. While its high-quality lock core remains impressively smooth even when exposed to grit and sand, the small shackle diameter creates logistical hurdles for mountain bikes or fat-tired commuters. Locking up often requires a clumsy weaving process through the rear triangle and limits the size of anchors you can utilize. For those who need more locking capacity without a massive drop in security, the New York Standard or the ABUS Granit X-Plus offer a more practical experience at the bike rack.
Versatility
The Fahgettaboudit Mini intentionally sacrifices versatility for compact security, resulting in it lagging behind the New York Standard in real-world flexibility. While the Standard easily captures both wheels and the frame against a rack, the Mini's tight dimensions limit you to just a single tube of your frame. While adding a cable can expand its reach, those with fancy bikes should be aware of the lock's limitations in 2026. We like this lock for parking in very public places, running into class, or a trip to the grocery store. It's not much bigger than the Evolution Mini, but putting this lock in my back pocket always made me feel like I'd lose my pants.
Should You Buy the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit U-Lock Mini?
The Fahgettaboudit Mini isn't cheap, and it isn't infallible. For a few dollars more, you can buy the substantially more secure and slightly more versatile Litelok X1 that is almost a pound lighter. While it's a high-quality lock, the premium cost doesn't match its level of security. As the ex-heavyweight champion in the lock category, it's getting harder and harder to make a compelling case for this lock.
What Other Bike Locks Should You Consider?
If you like the size of this lock, you might also look at the Kryptonite Evolution Mini-7 U-Lock. It's lighter and less expensive, and while it can be breached faster, we're talking about a matter of seconds, and both locks only fall to the power of an angle grinder. If you're a fan of New York's bulk and heft, the Kryptonite New York Standard U-Lock offers a bit more versatility.
contender as a potential alternative.
