Evolv Phantom LV Review

This is a stiff, aggressive shoe that can both edge and pull well, but it's only for super low-volume feet

Our Verdict

The Evolv Phantom LV is a great example of how important it is to fit your climbing shoes correctly. If you have a particularly low-volume foot, you'll find that the Phantom is a well-balanced shoe for bouldering and sport climbing. This stiff shoe edges well, yet still pulls into pockets thanks to its aggressive downturn. Made with synthetic materials, it's particularly durable, but it won't won't stretch out like leather shoes. However, if you have an average volume or wide foot, better look elsewhere.

Bottom Line This aggressive shoe is a durable workhorse, but it's only for folks with super low-volume feetThese high-performance slippers work well for almost all types of climbing, from cracks to steep sport climbs to boulderingAs edging machines, these shoes are great for hard sport climbing and overhanging boulderingThis slipper is comfortable and affordable, yet it's nearly as precise as more aggressive shoes, making it the perfect upgrade from your first pairA step above your average entry-level option, this affordable shoe is our top choice for first-time buyers

The Evolv Phantom LV sits between a soft comp shoe and a stiff edging shoe. It has a fairly aggressive shape, but its dual-midsole construction adds extra sensitivity, making it great for both steep sport climbing and technical bouldering. It also uses 4.2mm TRAX SAS rubber, which is super durable and stood up well to repeated edging on sharp rock.

We liked its dual midsole design because it supports your big toe while allowing more flexibility and sensitivity elsewhere. This is super useful when smearing as you can feel the surface better than you would in a very stiff edging shoe. It also adds versatility, making the Phantom LV just as solid on rock as it is in the gym.

Dislikes

Built on a super low-volume last, the Phantom LV has a super-narrow forefoot, lower instep, and compact heel – all together, this shoe is only for climbers with slim feet. Our feet are fairly average, with a slightly wider forefoot, and the fit is awkward. The heel, in particular, sits too low on our foot, which was pretty uncomfortable.

Just because it didn't fit our foot very well doesn't mean that the Phantom LV isn't comfortable for the right foot. The shoe is super stiff out of the box, and because it's made from synthetic materials, it won't stretch much. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's another reason to make sure the fit is right from the start.

Should You Buy the Evolv Phantom LV ?

Everyone has different feet, and climbing shoes fit everyone differently. But it's important to pay attention to the label – the “LV” in Phantom LV stands for “low-volume”, and in this case, they really mean it! At a similar price point to comparable shoes from Scarpa and La Sportiva, it really comes down to whether or not this shoe fits. If other shoes haven't worked because of your slim foot, try these.

What Other Climbing Shoes Should You Consider?

Folks with a fairly average foot will likely find the highly versatile La Sportiva Skwama - Women's fits better. But if you have a slightly wider foot, check out the Scarpa Instinct VS- Women's. It's similar to the Phantom LV in that it is stiffer under the forefoot than the Skwama, which gives you great edging power while still retaining a flexible midsole for smearing.
