Our Verdict

The La Sportiva TC Pro, though not a women's-specific shoe, is still the go-to for women who spend long days on the wall. They really shine while climbing wide cracks, as the high-top last protects your ankles from repeated abrasion against the rock. They're moderately asymmetrical but super stiff, making them great for standing on tiny holds. The shoe's stiffness comes with a few drawbacks, like reduced sensitivity for smearing and a limited ability to pull into overhangs. But of course, you don't choose the TC Pro for difficult bouldering or overhanging sport projects – you choose them for long multi-pitch and big wall climbing.

The TC Pro is excellent at edging. The super stiff construction makes them particularly dependable on dime edges and tiny footholds – exactly the type of things you'll find on the Dawn Wall of El Capitan. Although you can't really feel what you are standing on, the shoes tend to keep you on the rock.

These shoes are also a specialist for crack climbing. The higher ankle coverage provides exceptional protection and even a bit of stability when climbing cracks. They have a rather rounded toe box and don't fit quite as well in thin cracks, but for hand cracks and offwidths, it's hard to find a better shoe.

Dislikes

Because they're so flat, the TC Pro is not a good choice for steep climbing. The forefoot is rather rounded, and without any asymmetry, it's hard to toe into limestone pockets or other small holds. While the super-stiff sole is great for edging, it's not sensitive enough to feel around and grab the rock with your toes.

Sometimes it felt like we were wearing a hiking boot, and our feet felt a bit clumsy at first. We've now worn the TC Pro for many days worth of climbing, and we've gotten used to it. But if you are used to softer shoes, the TC Pro will be a tough adjustment – they're still much less sensitive than most of the climbing shoes on the market.

Should You Buy the La Sportiva TC Pro?

If you're into big wall climbing or crack climbing, specifically, then the TC Pro is still the shoe to buy. Once broken in, they are super comfortable to wear all day. The super-stiff platform can stand on even the smallest holds, and the extra ankle protection helps keep you from cuts and scratches while battling up your next offwidth.

What Other Climbing Shoes Should You Consider?

Without a doubt, the TC Pro is a shoe designed specifically for hard trad climbing. If you want something more versatile, we absolutely love the La Sportiva Katana Lace- Women's – this shoe can do it all, from crack climbing to hard edging on big faces, to even toeing into small holds. It's slightly softer than the TC Pro and has a slightly more aggressive design, so it performs better across disciplines.
