Our Verdict
The Nike Tempo SS Running Top is not about flashy technology or a premium price tag to get the job done. Built around the fundamentals of breathability, moisture management, and lightweight comfort, this mid-priced top offers dependable performance for runners who simply want to lace up and head out the door. Mesh underarm panels promote airflow when the pace picks up, while Nike's Dri-FIT fabric helps sweat evaporate quickly during hot-weather efforts. Although it lacks some of the innovation, fit technology, and versatility of newer performance tops, the Tempo SS remains a capable training companion, though not necessarily one at the top of our recommendations list.

Likes
The Nike Tempo SS Running Top is a mid-budget running top with a smooth finish and a tapered fit. Reflective logos add a small amount of visibility for dawn or dusk running. While not a substitute for reflective gear, it's a nice safety feature that many runners appreciate.

The large mesh panels under the arms provide noticeably better airflow than many basic running shirts. This helps the shirt feel cooler during hard workouts and warm-weather runs. Nike's Dri-FIT fabric moves sweat away from the skin and promotes quick evaporation. The shirt tends to dry rapidly once you stop sweating or encounter a breeze. We also noticed that the shirt absorbed noticeably fewer odors after runs than many other running shirts in our lineup, despite lacking any true odor-blocking properties.
Made from 100% recycled polyester, the fabric feels light and unobtrusive. It performs well during speed workouts, tempo runs, and hot summer training. Its minimal, flatlocked seams reduce the risk of chaffing, thereby increasing comfort.
Dislikes
While the tapered fit of the Nike Tempo SS suits some runners, we did not find it to our liking. The side panels' upper-cut design added some ventilation but made the shirt feel frumpy and too short on the sides. While what makes one runner feel confident and another frumpy is a matter of personal opinion, we didn't find that this shirt brought out our most confident-feeling selves.
Newer, more innovative running tops that often incorporate advanced fabrics, strategic body-mapped ventilation, or specialized performance features make the Tempo feel somewhat dated. The Nike SS Tempo delivers reliable moisture-wicking and breathability, but doesn't offer much beyond those fundamentals. Runners looking for cutting-edge materials or ultra-lightweight construction may find the Tempo less exciting than more tech-forward options.

The Tempo has a traditional “running shirt” look and feel, which limits its appeal outside of workouts, especially considering its somewhat short fit. More modern performance tops often blend technical performance with elevated comfort and style, making them equally suitable for running, travel, hiking, and everyday wear.
Should You Buy the Nike Tempo SS Running Top?
For the price, the Nike Tempo SS Running Top performs decently well. While not a standout running shirt in our lineup, it accomplishes what it sets out to. This shirt offers enough breathability, moisture control, and comfort to be a true running contender; it simply doesn't hit those marks as wholeheartedly as other shirts. If you are on a budget and seeking a running shirt to simply get the job done, this lightweight Nike top might be worth considering.

What Other Running Shirts Should You Consider?
If a budget buy is what you're after, the UA Tech V-Neck is available for slightly less than the Nike Tempo. The UA fits in a boxier, more inclusive way, but is even less tech-focused than the Tempo. The Arc'teryx Sunna Crew T-Shirt is a far pricier, far better-performing take on a running shirt. With true odor protection and a relaxed yet well-fitting fit, the Sunna feels far sturdier and very breathable after many washes. The Stio Lucent T-shirt is another high-scoring running top that offers all of the features we seek in one sleek, moisture-wicking package.
