Altra simplified things with the updated Altra Escalante 4, returning to the core features that originally made this minimally-minded shoe a favorite. This version skips extra add-ons and delivers a clean, lightweight design that feels fresh and naturally stable. Its zero-drop platform and minimal setup make it ideal for runners who enjoy a straightforward, close-to-the-ground ride. While it's not engineered for long races or intense speed work, it shines as an easygoing daily trainer that keeps things comfortable and uncomplicated, especially for runners who already enjoy a low-drop, wide toe box design.

The midsole of the Altra Escalante 4 feels structured but soft along the arch of the foot. While not particularly cushy, it does feel supportive. The heel collar offers some cushion, which adds to a sensation of structure without overwhelming feet with pillowy stuffing. The tongue is ultra-minimal and isn't attached along the lace bed of the shoe. This minimalist design helps ensure the shoe's weight is low, but since the tongue isn't cushioned, it can shift slightly during motion. We didn't have any complaints about this while running in these shoes, but it is worth noting.
Altra is known for its “foot-shaped” design, meant to follow the natural form of the human foot. Earlier versions of this shoe pushed that idea to the extreme, resulting in a noticeably wide, almost exaggerated fit. The latest Escalante refines that approach with a shape that matches a more typical foot and a toe box that's less dramatic than before. Combined with a slimmer midfoot, runners who prefer a very roomy forefoot might find this update a bit tight. For average-width feet, though, the new fit feels comfortable, balanced, and thoughtfully updated.

Cushioning
The Altra Escalante 4 sits close to the ground with a 23 mm stack height, so it's naturally not a plush, cushioned ride. Instead of building up the midsole, Altra keeps the platform streamlined and straightforward.
The Altra EGO foam delivers just enough padding to soften pavement impacts while still feeling light, quick, and grounded. If you prefer a straightforward, comfortable feel without thick layers of cushioning, this shoe hits that sweet spot. We found it great for everyday wear, gym workouts, and shorter runs. Runners seeking a blend of simplicity and comfort will likely appreciate the Escalante 4.

Breathability
The upper weave of the flexible Altra Escalante 4 is thicker than expected, which impacts its breathability. The knit of the engineered mesh feels tighter than most, resulting in a warmer upper than anticipated. Though lightweight, the modest breathability of this shoe's upper makes it slightly less desirable for warmer runs. Runners who desire the elements that the Escalante offers shouldn't be put off by its warmer upper; however, those who enjoy more breathability might seek out other options.

Traction
The Altra Escalante 4 features a lightly flexible rubber outsole, providing reliable grip on pavement, grass, and gravel. While it's not built for true trail running, its tread pattern handles sharp turns and uneven surfaces with confidence, giving a stable, sure-footed feel for everyday runs, gym workouts, and casual park jogs.

Should You Buy the Altra Escalante 4?
If you are looking to keep this fresh, minimal, and low-riding, the Altra Escalante 4 is a fantastic shoe to consider. While its unique blend of features won't suit all runners, its niche style and support will be exactly what some runners need. Fans of the first iteration of the Escalante will rejoice in what this fourth version offers, while those who fell in love with the last version might find the updated take to be a bit too stripped-down. If a zero-drop road shoe is what you need, we think that the Escalante is worth seeking out.
What Other Running Shoes Should You Consider?
If you know that a zero-drop shoe is the perfect fit for you but want something a bit more robust, the Altra Torin 8 might be a better fit for you. It lacks the simplicity and streamlined nature of the Escalante but wholeheartedly delivers in terms of grippy traction, cushion, and zero-drop comfort. If an agile fit seems right but a zero-drop shoe doesn't entice you, a versatile daily trainer like the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v5 or the Adidas Adizero Evo SL might better suit your needs. Both aforementioned options offer loads of versatility in a fit that feels a bit more traditional.
