On Cloudsurfer Next - Women's Review

Our Verdict
Our Analysis and Test Results
With a moderate 6 mm drop and 34 mm heel stack, the forefoot rides comfortably high, making this road running shoe a better choice for runners who land on the front of their feet as they stride.
Cushioning
The combination of textiles that creates the cushioning profile of the On Cloudsurfer Next feels fairly high-tech. The underfoot cushioning is composed of Helion superfoam, which provides bounce to the midsole, and CloudTec Phase cushion, which adds softness as the feet roll across paved surfaces.
Despite their high-tech design, these materials feel firm underfoot. The heel sits at 34 mm above the ground, and the forefoot sits at 28 mm, both of which are comfortable heights. We noticed that, despite the firm countenance, the cushioning of the Cloudsurfer blew out quicker than we expected, leading to an even firmer underfoot experience.
Upper Comfort
The engineered mesh upper of the Cloudsurfer Next is smooth and comfortable straight out of the box. The upper molds comfortably to the runner's foot, adding a personalized fit, though this also leads to quicker wear over time. The shoe runs slightly narrow, but still falls within an average fit range. Since we conducted most of our testing runs in the heat of summer in California, we couldn't help but notice how profoundly hot the upper of this shoe runs. While this might not be a dealbreaker for runners in some climates, those seeking a shoe to tackle warm-weather runs may want to think twice. Overall, the steaminess of the toe box wouldn't prevent us from purchasing this shoe if all of its other elements worked, but it is something to keep in mind.
Stability
The Cloudsurfer Next delivers more stability than softer On models, thanks to its firmer underfoot ride and moderate heel-to-toe drop. The shoe's overall build enhances that steady feel, while the stiffer heel counter further locks the foot in place. Together, these elements create a responsive, supportive option for runners who prioritize stability without sacrificing the sleek design On is known for.
Weight
The 7.39 ounce (per women's size 6.5 shoe) Cloudsurfer Next weighs in next to the maximally cushioned options. While its weight is well-distributed, this road running shoe weighs a bit more than shoes that offer similar stability and punchiness, which is worth considering if you are seeking a lightweight option. The weight of this shoe won't necessarily slow you down, but if a high-tech road shoe is what you're after, other contenders can add more levity to your paces.
Traction
The outsole of the On Cloudsurfer Next isn't the most confidence-inspiring. On added a layer of rubber across the outsole, doubling up in high-wear areas, which adds a bit of traction. This rubber, however, features a shallow texture pattern that can skid out on wet surfaces. The midline of the Cloudsurfer isn't coated in protective rubber, leaving it susceptible to abrasions and other wear and tear.
Should You Buy the On Cloudsurfer Next?
The On Cloudsurfer Next stands out as a solid shoe in the On lineup, blending dependable stability with technical design elements that we enjoy having in our road running shoe rotation. However, it's not a shoe that will suit everyone. The firmer ride lacks the plush comfort many runners look for, and breathability is limited. While its price point is fairly approachable, long-term durability raises concerns. For runners who value stability and responsiveness in a sleek package, the Cloudsurfer Next may be worth considering, but those seeking a softer, more cushioned feel might want to explore othercompetitors.
What Other Road Running Shoes Should You Consider?
The Asics Novablast 5 is an ultra-high scoring road running shoe for women. With well-rounded comfort, technical materials, and an energetic bounce to its midsole, the Novablast hits each of our testing metrics with ease, far surpassing the scores earned by the Cloudsurfer. Runners who want a stability shoe should look into the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 24. While not as dynamic as the Cloudsurfer, the Adrenaline prides itself on its incredible stability. The Hoka Mach 6 stands out as an awesomely versatile road running shoe. The Mach is a more durable and reliable option than the Cloudsurfer, offering a similarly firm and technical ride.
