Our Verdict

The Salomon Genesis is a dynamic trail shoe that offers a little bit of everything. While this shoe's versatility is high, it is a shoe that will most likely appeal to experienced trail runners and hikers. Salomon's typical one-pull lace system is a technical feature that doesn't perform exactly as intended, but it offers a snug midfoot lockdown while allowing runners to customize their fit. This tough Salomon shoe is best for the runner who wants to feel fast, stable, and in control on technical terrain without going full minimalist or full max cushion. Built to help you dominate your favorite route or take on new heights, the Salomon Genesis is a shoe that is ready to put in the work.

Our Analysis and Test Results

The Salomon Genesis is a rugged, versatile trail shoe designed for experienced runners who want a balanced mix of speed, stability, and control on technical terrain. This shoe is designed to be driven, not passively ridden, so runners seeking that sensation will like the nimble fit it offers.

Comfort and Fit

The Salomon Genesis delivers a comfort and fit experience that is more precise than plush, wrapping the foot in a secure, dialed-in feel. The moderate cushioning provides enough softness for longer efforts without muting ground feedback, while the build creates a snug, locked-in hold that minimizes movement on uneven terrain. While comfortable on our testers' average feet, the fit runs fairly standard to slightly narrow, especially through the midfoot. Overall, the Genesis feels less like a slipper and more like a performance tool, comfortable in a supportive, confidence-building way rather than soft or indulgent.

Stability

The Genesis stands out for its inherently stable, confidence-inspiring ride, built around a combination of framework support and precise foothold rather than width, stiffness, or side walls. The underfoot framework system that Salomon enacts adds subtle guidance and lateral stability, helping keep your foot aligned on off-camber terrain and sketchy descents without feeling restrictive. This balance is what helps cement this shoe for runners who are seeking a technical performance machine. The platform feels grounded and controlled, with a mid-level stack, 33 mm in the heel, that keeps you connected to the trail while still offering protection.

Traction

Designed with an All Terrain Contagrip outsole, the Salomon Genesis grips consistently across loose, rocky, and uneven surfaces, giving an in-control feeling when the terrain gets chaotic. One thing our testers loved about the outsole of this shoe is that it is not overbuilt. Instead, the multidirectional lugs bite and build confidence through control. Built for precision, the Genesis is a shoe we recommend for nimble-footed runners looking to find a shoe they can power across rock gardens in.

Foot Protection

The Salomon Genesis offers a well-rounded approach to foot protection that prioritizes durability and trail feel without sacrificing confidence on rough terrain. Underfoot, a thin, embedded layer helps filter out sharp rocks and uneven surfaces, reducing harsh impact while still allowing you to stay connected to the ground. Up top, the tightly woven upper resists abrasion from rocks and trail debris, making it especially reliable on rugged terrain. A reinforced toe cap and added medial protection further shield your foot from direct impacts, while the overall build keeps debris and trail “noise” from becoming a distraction. It's not overly bulky, but it strikes a smart balance. The Genesis is protective enough for technical trails, without feeling heavy or overbuilt.

Weight

At 7.96 ounces per women's size 6.5 shoe, the Genesis is on the slightly heavy side of average when it comes to trail running shoes. It isn't light enough to feel ultralight, but it is also hefty enough to feel cumbersome underfoot. The weight of this shoe aligns well with the protection and traction it offers.

Should You Buy the Salomon Genesis?

In some ways, the Salomon Genesis may simply be too much shoe for the brand new trail runner. From its agility-forward feel to its one-pull lace system, this shoe seems to be geared towards runners who are used to having dirt beneath their feet. This is not to say that it isn't a suitable shoe for beginner trail runners, but it isn't our top recommendation. Runners who want to take on technical terrain and feel in control and precise in their movements should absolutely consider the Salomon Genesis.

What Other Trail Running Shoes Should You Consider?

As mentioned, the Genesis isn't the most beginner-friendly shoe in our lineup. Runners who want a shoe geared for ultimate comfort and newfound confidence on the trail would have better luck in a shoe like the Altra Experience Wild 3 or the Topo Ultraventure 4. Both options offer more spacious toe boxes and gentle comfort, making them enticing for time on the trails. For a solid all-around trail shoe that will be with you from hikes to epic races to travel, the Hoka Speedgoat 7 is a versatile and comfortable shoe built to help you reach your trail goals.
